Erosion Control Products
Every development project has areas with the potential for soil erosion. Temporary ECBs stop soil erosion and promote seed germination. Temporary products are typically made of natural material, which is bio- and photo-degradeable. Typical material are straw, excelsior, and coconut. Straw and excelsior products last 6 to 12 months. Coconut products last up to 3 years. EPA recognized as BMPs, Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRMs) and High Performance TRMs (HPTRM) consist of various UV-stabilized synthetic fibers and filaments processed into 3-D matrices. There are two types of TRMs; Standard and High Performance. Hydraulic and physical stress limits (survivability) are issues that should be considered when evaluating TRMs for long term post-construction applications. Some TRMs are utilized with other components to create composite systems. Permanent erosion control products stop soil erosion and promote seed germination. They are typically made of synthetic material which will not biodegrade and will create a foundation for plant roots to take hold, extending the viability of grass beyond its natural limits. Vegetation is the most effective form of erosion control available, capturing up to seven times more sediment than conventional hard armor solutions like rock riprap and concrete. However, establishing and maintaining its long-term effectiveness can prove challenging.
